I purchased a Skullcandy pipe iHome a year or so ago. It was like $60. Worst $60 I've ever spent. It had bright blue LEDs that couldn't be turned off. The remote was useless, the music would start and stop on its own, the iPod it was built to house didn't fit properly, but, most annoyingly, whenever I put my iPod in, it would automatically start playing music, and then CRANK THE VOLUME UP AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE. There was no way to stop this with the useless remote or the volume controls. If you pressed the volume down button on the pipe, it would turn it down, but as soon as your finger left the button, it would crank back up again. It would seem DJ Snake was haunting my pipe. You had to unlock the iPod and pause the song from there. And then, sometimes, in the middle of the night, it would start playing at full blast again. The biggest blessing of the whole experience was the fact that, 6 months after buying it, it died completely. Perhaps the single least functional, most problematic product I've ever owned.

Damn, that must feel horrid. I never took my headphones to school due to the same issue. Imbeciles mocking about. My girlfriends laptop was once tossed from one side of the class to the other. It wasn't in the class I was in, but the computer has a dent and the screen had weird colors on a corner on top. Hate the imbecile who did it, though my girlfriend isn't very evil so she didn't make a big deal.

Also, if you want to really test the low end threshold, you should try Henryk Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. ( )

It starts out very very low, so you will have to turn it up to hear it. Yes, it is not current. Gorecki composed the music trying to place a woman who has lost her children to the Nazis in WWII. Probably the only piece of music that has ever reduced me to tears, it is fully of anguish and hope the likes of which I pray I never know.

'Skullcandy' - I found your problem. I had a pair of $50 (iirc) skullcandys, they weren't terrible but then they broke. I upgraded to nice mid level headphones and have loved the quality ever since. Spend the money, you'll be glad you did.

They're actually pretty kick-ass for being $15 earbuds. They're more expensive stuff sounds amazing as well, I almost bought a $100 pair of over-ears while I was in NYC.

Their cords are kinda dainty though. I've learned that the hard way on a pair.

It gets weirder. Since I just typed that above rant, I thought, "You know, I think it's still lying around somewhere. I wonder if it still works?" Previously, I had been running it off of wall power. However, it also takes batteries, and for some reason I tried those first. Four AAAs in, and even though it had been in a pile of junk collecting dust for a year and a half now, it turned on and worked better than new. None of the old problems, just crisp, clear sound that played and paused when I wanted it, and played at the volume I wanted it.

The second I plugged in the wall power cord, it died. When I unplugged the wall cord and it was back on battery power, it worked again.

What. The. Fuck?

I'll replace the cord tomorrow and see if that helps.

Either way, thanks to this rant, I "gained" a functioning, very nice iPod speaker.

They're not the worst headphones ever (cough beats), but you only do so much when they're that cheap. After going through these headphones, it makes listening on laptop speakers actually bad, just saying.

The nice thing about my spoiled high school; the school leases every student a Macbook (We are getting Airs this year, and I am typing this on the 2011 Macbook that I bought from the school at the end of my lease last year). This means 1) If someone else f***s up your computer, it isn't really yours. They answer to the school. 2) They have a laptop, too. They throw yours, you throw theirs. Nobody has ever done that though.

Funny story about my school:

One of my Middle School classmate's parents had an 11 car garage. One day they went to pick her up after school on the way to take the red ferrari 308 targa to the shop, they were flatbed towing it with their canary yellow Hummer H1 Alpha. Everybody acted like it was no big deal, like it was commoncplace. Well, it kinda was, there was always cool cars at my school.

One trip to my favorite local 80's themed hangout (RadioShack) and a new power cord later, and for the first time in 2 years, I have a fully-functioning, very cool iHome. Turns out, the cord that came with it was defective, and somehow had been messing with the other electrics before finally dying, and thus shorting out power to the iHome whenever I plugged it in.

Long story short, I am thrilled right now.
